It is possible to route VNC through an ssh tunnel, so if a ssh connection can be established it can work. VNC requires that a one machine be able to reach the other. TeamViewer uses a third party proxy that can be reached from behind a firewall with NAT to allow machines that could not normally connect directly to each other to establish a connection - to the horror and consternation of network administrators overwhere. It works well, and has a different connection model than TeamViewer. ![]() The other is to, rather than start an X session from startx, I just start a display manager using systemctl without enabling it.īut, to answer the original question, VNC. One is to spin up a Windows VM and run it there (if you are planning to be a client). And it won't work at all as a server if you are running Wayland instead of Xorg. Right now, Teamviewer for, some unfathomable reason, only works if you start your session with a Display Manager.
